The new AOR AR-DV10 & TETRA

Postby radjock » Sun Jan 14, 2018 12:33 pm

I’ve just had a glance at the features of this new handheld; impressive.
TETRA is one of the digital modes included.
So I’m assuming one would be able to monitor and listen to the cops etc, hypothetically of course?

No, that won't be possible. Two issues: These AORs are only able to decode DMO mode (i.e. direct terminal to terminal comms). The vast majority of blue lights comms go over the AIrwave network, ie are TMO (terminal to mast via the network to terminal) which can't be decoded. There will be some short range terminal to terminal comms which I believe will be DMO, but less frequent. However, all Airwave comms are TEA2 encrypted anyway.

London Underground, Glasgow Underground, Nottingham Trams and Dublin Trams are all Tetra and Tyne and Wear Metro is converting to Tetra. None encrypted.

I know software is available to monitor but what about the new scanner?

TETRA is in use at some large airports:
454.6 TETRA AirRadio EGCC Manchester, EGPF Glasgow
454.625 TETRA AirRadio EGPD Aberdeen
454.65 TETRA AirRadio EGBB Birmingham
454.65 TETRA AirRadio EGCC Manchester, EGPF Glasgow
454.725 TETRA AirRadio EGCC Manchester
454.75 TETRA AirRadio EGBB Birmingham
I don't know if they are encrypted or not.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

So when the add says Tetra is that not a little misleading? Should it not say some Tetra but not the interesting stuff?

Is there a technical reason why it will receive TMO but not DMO? Seems a shame to be so close yet so far.

Of course it's a bit misleading...that's the world of marketing for you. It does do TETRA, TETRA DMO. If they wanted to be more accurate, they would point that out. Same for NXDN. It should say NXDN 6.25khz only Very Narrow (and not imply it does NXDN 12.5khz as well): atm only Whistler can claim NXDN as it does both.

Other way round: it decodes DMO and not TMO. There is a different signalling format within the same standard for TETRA DMO and TMO. DMR is similar. Perhaps try to think of it more as a network device than a radio: and the difference between DMO and TMO as operating as a small standalone point-to-point link vs part of a worldwide enterprise scale IT network.

Thanks for the clarification. Kind of understood.

Now that my initial excitement has died down and the reality of the cost has sunk in, what exactly am I getting that is of practical use worth spending an additional £500/600 comparted with the Whistler or Uniden DMR receivers?
