Can I listen into GWR Railway Staff Radios?

Postby 80sKid » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:36 pm

Hi All, please bear with me, I'm a newbie to radio.

I'm a commuter into London Padington from Reading. I also use the Tubes, mainly upto Kings Cross.

The trains in and out of London are often delayed and I was wondering If It was possible to listen into Great Western Railway staff radio coms so I can get the inside scoop of what's going on and stay ahead of other commuters. The same for the Tube (TFL I guess?)

I have a Dual Band DMR (RD-5R) Baofeng Radio and i'm also looking at a handheld scanner like a Uniden UBC-125XLT. An suggestions on scanners i'd be very grateful. Something less than £150 ideally...

I'd be very grateful of any advice.

I think they use a mix of Hytera and Motorola's at Paddington so you may be able to listen if they have no encryption but not sure if your DMR radio will do it. As for TFL Underground, last time i saw they were using Tetra system and not sure if its Airwave, if it is then you would not get that on any scanner or DMR radio. The Uniden is a very good scanner for the price and worth a buy.

What frequencies are you finding?
I presume as you have a tranciver that you are interested in radio, so assume that you are listening to see what you can find?
The 125 is a great little scanner for the money. I have the 125's big brother the 3500 & it's younger brother the 230 & rate both very highly, considering what they cost & would rate the 125 as excellent value for money at around £130.

thanks m0lsx and thelad, i'll think i'll invest in a Uniden scanner and sit in a coffee shop/or pub at Paddington station and scan the frequencies.
