Airband: Funcube Pro+ & Diamond D-777 & SDR#

Postby RobBain » Tue Feb 05, 2019 4:58 pm

Hi

I'm Rob from NW Kent (M5RSB); new to the forum but not new to radio.

I'm mainly interested in civil airband. Any aviation enthusiasts running the same set-up as mine? Keen to hear of experiences, compare settings (SDR#), tips and tricks etc. I'm also keen to know how my set-up compares with others - and if/how people may have started with this set-up but have extended their listening from there.

Kind regards,

Rob

Welcome to the forum Rob.

I assume you have Flightradar24? If not there is a free option ?& it allows you to see air traffic close to you, or in any other location you wish around the world.

Hello Rob,
Welcome, Im very keen on civil airband listening and it just so happens that after around 30+yrs of trying all manner of analogue amateur radio trancievers and receivers/scanners and a play with a few dongles for adsb.

I have a new toy that has arrived this week (purchased secondhand). Thought I should treat myself..I have been dithering for so long about one of these little things I cant tell you.

I have the airspy R2 linked to raspberry pi 3 acting as the radio server.

Early days but impressed so far with Youseffs kit.
I like the convienience of logging in remotely, but is this set up as good as a traditional scanner ?
The jury is out...and it will be out for a while !

So Far ? Some good points, some bloody annoying ones as well...

Would be good to compare notes on SDR#

I intend to do a bit of a review on my blog from an airband listeners perspective coming into the "new" world of sdr after a few decades of owning quite a few analogue devices over the years.

Hi Mike

What an interesting post! Many thanks indeed. Your new toy does look interesting. Let me know how you get on.

I started with the basics. Get a decent antenna up on the roof and get it high. That, via some industrial-spec coax, was attached to my trusty Yupiteru MVT-7100 and served me well for many (10?) years. By 'served me well' I mean no problem with ground comms at LGW which is 17 miles away from me. I can catch many aircraft on the ground at LGW which I reckon is pretty good.

Then, late in the day, I came across SDR. After a couple of beers one night (breaking my golden rule) I pulled the trigger on the Funcube and now have it set-up. Reception-wise, it seems as good as the Yupi and I like having PC control (and feeding the audio through my PC speakers). But it does have little niggles.

- the frequencies tend to wander a little.
- the audio was (initially) well balanced between controllers and pilots - but recently the pilots are blaring in and the controllers are quiet. In fact, I've had to adjust all my volume settings. This is a real disappointment and I don't know why it's happened only recently.

Interested in any thoughts.

Oh and, rookie question, why do the controllers often show two spikes in my RF spectrum but pilots have only one?

I've tried fiddling with most of the settings in SDR# but tend to have most of the options (eg. gain control, filters etc.) switched off. Maybe I'm missing something??

So, in summary, nothing wrong with my set-up (although the recent audio balancing issue is troublesome). I like it. I'm just wondering if I'm missing any tricks.

Kind regards,

Rob

H Rob,
In SDR# ,Set main gain slider to about 18 or 19, Then Please check if the grey AGC menu tab, is AGC off ? (box is unticked), that could cause the issue you have for sure, try enabling it again to see if that does the job and smooths things out for both sides of the transmission .
Off to work now Rob , back later.
Regards,

Mike

Mike fixed it. Schoolboy error. I'd switched the AGC off. Won't make that mistake again! Audio nicely re-balanced now.

Thanks Mike.

Just before my wife earned her foundation licence she was at a special event station that I was helping at. A well experienced G station spent some time with her & talked her through what was required & then got her to make a CQ call on 2 meters.
The reply was. Very nice CQ. But could I suggest you turn the repeater shift off?
The G station who had set the radio went a funny beetroot type of colour & admitted full liability.
I bet during the next few years as you learn more, instead of making fewer mistakes, you will just learn to spot them a LITTLE quicker.
My biggest Boo Boo was finding that my antenna did not tune up as it should during a special event station. The reason was simple. I had forgotten to connect it to the SWR meter output. But my manual ATU tuned the SWR meter up perfectly OK on a couple of bands. :embarrased: :embarrased:
