I live in Cheshire, near Manchester airport, i would like to listen to military aircraft, however I was wandering if most of the traffic is along the east coast or west coast. Am I likely to pick up anything where I live? I don’t know where the raf bases are situated apart from raf valley, in Anglesey.

Cumbria is a busy area for low flying, in the booklet above Cumbria is Area 17, page 21.
And Manchester it's self comes within area 8, which is page 17.

Low Flying Area 8 stretches from the Ribble Valley and Forest Moor in the north, to Warwick in the south, and from the Wirral in the west to Doncaster and Nottingham in the east, Low Flying Area 8 has no major flying stations but is home to RAF Stafford and RAF Woodvale. Low Flying Area 8 contains the large avoidance areas of Liverpool/Manchester, Blackpool/Blackburn, Leeds/Bradford, Derby/Nottingham and the West Midlands conurbation.


Take a look at activity local to you on ADS-B Exchange, it will give you some idea of what is happening in your area.

Egg beaters transitting the area will generally give a courtesy call to / or be under control of Manchester RADAR. If West of the low level corridor they'll more likely speaking to Liverfool RADAR. Only other mil at low level will likely be doing practice approaches (hawks mainly now that the tonkas are all but retired, occasional eurofarce) at Speke or VERY rarely Ringway.
Occasional military movement in/out of Ringway for the paintshop.
Occasional military visitors to Speke such as the islanders enroute to/from NI on occasion.
UK Mil egg beaters use Barton for fuel stops reasonably regularly and will be using normal low level VHF freqs for the most part.

Depending how high your antenna is you'll be able to listen to mil traffic over Valley/Vale of York and off the East coast.

There is a monthly timetable for the low flying training areas but I wouldn't pay too much attention to it as it's too general:

Far better to actually search for the radio activity...then you'll find things like the hercs co-ordinating a paradrop and resupply mission as they drone over at 20000' on their way from Brize to Scotland and other such interesting comms.

You can hear military aircraft at high level on any of the Swanwick Mil frequencies, VHF and UHF.
They are a good starting point.
Often there is but one aircraft, or one flight, on each frequency.
May be used by civil flights transiting military airspace.
Usually quiet at weekends, usually silent at night.

Just the VHF freqs to get you started: (ICF is Initial Contact Frequency)

127.45 and 135.925 probably your best bet.

278.0 (NATO Low Fly freq) occasionally used by an aircraft to broadcast intention to enter a low fly area.

Forgot to add that you should also be able to hear some of the comms from over the sea such as those during the recent Faraday Field excercise which saw a bunch of egg beaters based at Altcar for a week in January. Usually around three similar exercises a year based there but this was a bit larger than the usual LOBSTER POT exercises over there.

Sometimes there will be milair activity that is more unusual or significant...such as today with what was almost certainly the last time you'd have a chnace to hear an RAF tornado taking fuel in ARA13 (which is within easy listening distance of cheshire)
