Just check some simple things... Leave the steps on 12.5khz, check the mode is AM, as opposed to NAM, and make sure the ATT is off.
It's a great radio, and very versatile.
Cheers.

You have it set to NFM, not AM. It needs to be AM mode for airband

Have you tried the WAM mode setting as I find if the transmission is off frequency by a few Khz with my 8600 in AM mode the audio appears weak and or unreadable . You should also set the step on civil airband to 8.33 khz as this may effect the front end selectivity.

The low audio on my Mk2 is most noticeable on strong local signals when the signal appears to overload the front end.

Alternatively try the mode setting for searching as AUTO

NB the auto step and auto mode are linked and changing either will effect the other .

Further investigating my 8600 you may have a rx that has incorrectly set up search banks . Mine has search bank A as milair and mode AM with 25Khz steps my Civilair is search bank a with mode as AM and again 25Khz steps( which should now be set to 8.33Khz) . Do you have a Manual as setting up search banks can be found on page 76 .

I have never used search mode as I find it is not very effective and tend to use scan mode and use various scanning directories to ascertain the freqs to program the memories

Ok, let's keep this simple...if you listen to an AM transmission (ALL civil airband is AM) using NFm modulation then you will always get low volume.
If your scanner is de-faulting instead to NFM for searching the airband band then that is the root of your problem, and needs to be updated.
