Is CB still going on?

Postby airfixpilot » Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:48 pm

This is a daft question, but is CB still on the airwaves? I don't see many cars or trucks with the CB antenna anymore. Just been to Knights CB shop were they do all radio including Ham and CB, and they assure me it is still busy on CB. They do all the new range of rigs, which include the 80 channel and ssb ones, with all the European frequencies. Now you dont need a licence to use them, and the sets are much smaller, eg CRT one.

This in mind I bought a CB off ebay (CRT ONE), and awaiting arrival. I just hope I haven't wasted my cash. Last time I was on the air was about the 70s to 80s'. I guess the mobile phone has had a devastating effect on two way CB, but hope there is some thing out there. :walkietalkie:

Hi, It certainly is here in mid and north Wales, lots of farmers using them in there tractors and other vehicles of a day, around Wrexham queensferry and liverpool there are a lot of users each night usually on channel 16 as I belive they have a facebook page advertising to get more onboard. Also of a day I normally drive around with my scanner on when comuting and get lots of truck drivers using them in convoy around the Telford and Birmingham area motorways. The users these days seem a bit more pleasent than 20 years ago so you can have a more sensible chat, I talk to the ones up in Wrexham and liverpool etc but only when up that way mobile, At home I only here the farmers in there tractors as I live quite rural, but as there busy working I don't disturb them. Mainly got my cb for when mobile or on holidays in my tourer caravan.

I also have the crt one N, the N meaning it is the later version with signal metre. Did you buy it from the seller nocando? He also has a shop online called pjbox. I got a good deal from him which included uniden 125 scanner, crt one N cb, plus moonraker mini magmount at £160 delivered next day.

Will you be using mobile or at home?

Hi mate
Nice to know CB is alive. Not used one for at least twenty to thirty years, and was taken aback with the small CRT One in Knights CB shop (its online). I am on the other side of the country than you, east coast near Grimsby (local town).

We get a lot of foreign truckers from the continent coming off the docks into and out of the UK. Do the foreign truckers use their own frequencies on our shores, eg would Dutch truckers use the Dutch CB frequencies rather then the UK CB frequencies?.

Not sure until it gets here if the CRT One is the N version, although it wont bother me if it has not a signal meter. I will check out that shop you mentioned.

Not sure what frequency they would decide to use once in the UK, only good thing is that the CB has a scan function so you could select one band at a time and leave the CB scanning for half an hour or so and see what comes through. http://www.pjbox.co.uk/catalogsearch/re ... tistandard

There are not many truckers using CB now. I use to move trucks around for a couple of dealers & have moved literally 100's of trucks for servicing, MOT's & repairs & can only think of one those that had a CB in it.
I have heard a few nets of truckers on 2 meters & one was, I believe up in Humberside. But that net was especially unfriendly, there was a lift on & they consistently ignored calls from others.

Not sure if it is my regular travel area but lots of trucks have CB Springer antennas attached to the cab roof. Maybe because around here the band is quite enough to use without getting interrupted and maybe open enough area for CB frequency to travel a good distance.

They will probably be drivers doing local work, who just chat to each other.

So do truckers use any kind of radio other than CB, and mobile phone?. Maybe the company PMR is used.

Going on from this are there any other two way radio which could be used with No licence, or is the next step Ham radio. Maybe 446mhz walkie talkies or some other form.
 .

I think I have wasted my money buying this CB, if no one is on it    . :embarrased:

What do you guys think??

446 is no use as it is such short range. It may be used on site, but not out & about.
A lot of operators have thier own PMR frequencies & there is the £75 for 5 year PMR Light Simple licence, which covers as many radios as you want. But they MUST be mobile or handheld & not a radio with a base antenna. Site Simple is for that.
Mobile phones have a VERY big advantage over radio & it's not privacy. It's the ability to track your vehicles & what they are doing. Walk into any serious operator & you will find they will have tracking on their trucks.

I will be surprised if you don't find anybody using in your area but it is mainly going to come down to your antenna, I know the Wrexham users have no problem talking to another group in Liverpool, Widnes and queensferry so a good 20 to 25 miles Bee-line distance, but getting this range is going to require you to invest in a good antenna and get it as high as possible, https://damsu.co.uk/two-way-radio/antennas/cb-base.html
