Hollyhead Coastguard

Postby kiac2802 » Fri Apr 12, 2019 6:41 pm

Hi All,

Last night i managed to pick up a transmission from Hollyhead Coastguard. Granted it wasnt the clearest in the world, but still i was pretty suprised by it.

When i checked the distance to see how far away it was from me, it came out at just over 100 miles as the crow flies, surely there has to be a repeater somewhere near Manchester or would i be actually picking it from 100 miles away?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I used to hear it from Ayrshire, but the repeater was on Snaefell, Isle of Man a sfar as I'm aware, as was used by Liverpool. Still, that was nearly 95 miles from Snaefell to my house. Information on where transmitter sites are used to be freely available, they seem to be a bit hidden now. Which channel did you hear it on, 62, 63 or 64?

First heard it on CH16 doing an all stations call, then heard it again on CH63, quality wasn't the best but you could hear ever word.

Not 100% sure which transmitter sites Holyhead uses but these are in the area (clockwise around the coast):

Blaenplwyf (TV mast) near Aberystwyth :62 (May be used by / shared with Milford Haven)
Rhiw, Lleyn Peninsula :64
South Stack, Anglesey :63
Great Ormes Head, Llandudno :64
Mole-y-Parc (TV mast) Flintshire :63 (May be used by / shared with Liverpool)

You can hear things at some distance during dx conditions.
Here in Birmingham, I've picked up the French coastguard before now!

I use this site, http://www.coastalradio.org.uk/index.html although I hadn't looked at it for a while until yesterday, it used to give the transmitters locations and which channels they used, they seem to have gone. Liverpool when we had it I could hear off Snaefell on The Isle of Man, but also they had a transmitter in I think Langthwaite, North Yorkshire which covered the Morecambe Bay area.

Around Morecambe and Lancaster they blast in at +30 and even when they aren't transmitting to this area i still get them at around 9 i have seen a post that going further up North they then start to drop off from the Lakes upwards.

Thanks for the replies everyone, all i've been using to receive them is a Whistler TRX1 and a dipole antenna that i got from Broadsword on Facebook. Mighty impressed it if its pulling in signals from that far out
