Uniden UBCD-3600XLT or Whistler TRX-1?

Postby uberlamo » Tue Nov 14, 2017 10:39 pm

I'm in the market for a new digital scanner and would like opinions on the Uniden UBCD-3600XLT and Whistler TRX-1. I understand the TRX-1 is a pain in the behind to program from what I have read on various forum topics and the Uniden is more user friendly but do they both decode the same digital modes? Why would I pick one over the other?

I like listening to VHF air band, 2m/70cm ham bands and anything in-between.

Very similar in operation and complexity, but put simply:
The 3600 looks better, the TRX1 works better...

Thanks for the reply, that's is what I thought the answer would be after reading a few threads on here.

I use an Airspy at home but would like something to use whilst I'm out and about at work or air shows.

I understand both require initial setup via a pc (or have I misunderstood) but was curious about performance in the field so to speak.

Thanks

In general analogue use they both perform, with the 3600 being a bit deaf..
Digital reception depends on your location and the amount of digital radio traffic in your area..
Both have their own analogue and digital search modes that work pretty well straight out of the box..
A computer is a must when programming your digital finds into memory..
There are some dedicated groups for these scanners..

Just reading the threads on here about this range of scanners,

is it as keep-it-simple-stupid as it scans and de-crypts, so you can hear DMR like you would analogue or air?

sorry for the bone question.

They don't 'decrypt', they 'decode'.
The difference is fundamental, yet many people clearly do not understand.

You cannot 'decrypt' anything without the key.
Morse is an example of an encoded transmission, but does not require any form of decryption.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

To expand on the point made by Minus1.
Digital signals are like AM, FM or SSB, they are just another mode of transmission.
And in the same way we use the word analogue to cover a variety of modes such as SSB, AM, FM, CW etc. We use digital to cover a variety of other modes. So not all digital signals are the same or resolvable via any given receiver.
Most signals, analogue or digital, are also capable of being encoded or scrambled in some way or form. And with digital signals, if it's encoded, then you need both the correct mode ability & the correct decode key, to resolve it.

Having used DMR Radios... The TRX1 and 2... AORDV1... and the 3600XLT... I would say the TRX1 and TRX2 are the best currently available DMR scanners
