Scanner picking up a lot of CB activity

Postby Southwales » Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:49 pm

Hi, the last 48 hours my scanner has been stopping on the stored CB frequencies and I thought maybe just interference, although thought that in amongst the crackle and hiss I could hear faint voices, now tonight it clearly is voices which are foreign languages, is this likely to be something to do with the weather, I am really surprised by this as I am in rural Wales surrounded by large hills so normally receive very little, this is with the scanner connected to the homemade attic bicone antenna.

Yes it's a slight lift on. Program the 10 meter repeaters in. They are always worth a listen.
29.600 is FM simplex calling frequency
29.610 PORTUGAL & NEWFOUNDLAND
29.620 BOSTON U.S. & BELGIUM
29.630 GERMANY
29.640 USA REPEATERS, including a 1 Kilowatt one in New York. Antenna was on top of twin towers.
29.650 USA and JAPAN
29.660 AUSTRIA, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, GERMANY, PORTUGAL & BELGIUM.
29.670 FRANCE, GERMANY & NETHERLANDS.
29.680 DENMARK, FINLAND, GERMANY, PORTUGAL, SWEEDEN & DENMARK.
29.690 GERMANY & IRELAND.

I have work NY several time, Sweden, Switzerland & Austria, from memory.
The UK has 3 10 meter repeaters.

Northampton, 29.640.
Ludlow 29.690
Wiltshire 29.210. This repeater is a cross band one & the input is on 50.520.

Hi, Thank you for the frequencies, have put them into my uniden 125. At the moment it has gone back to very slight voices in amongst the crackling, but earlier if you spoke the languages you would have no problem hearing every word spoken. Obviously understand the main reason I am getting these foreign frequencies is because of the lift, but it also shows how good this antenna is that you all helped give me the required info to build so thank you again.

Not really, during a decent tropo lift I have spoken to a German Radio Ham via a French repeater using my Yaesu VX-7r & it's standard duck on 2 meters whilst out walking my dogs. And I know someone who has spoke to an American Radio Ham on 10 meters who was out with a converted CB handheld back during the great times we all had during the late 70's early 80's.
That is the great thing with lifts, there is no need to have top spec equipment or high power. I have easily worked the New York 10 meter repeater, which has a great antenna system & one kilowatt of output power on a compromise antenna using 5 watts.
Most of the fools who demanded 27MHz CB back in the day, had no idea about solar conditions, or what they were or did. Conditions at that time were fantastic & somedays you really could chat to the USA on FM using a wet piece of string.
