Marine problem,

Postby Russ37 » Wed Oct 03, 2018 2:55 pm

Hi, all I live in Bolton Low houses near Wigton, I can see the Solway firth from my front room around 5 miles away. The problem is I can't get any marine signal, my scanner shows the Caldbeck mast, but Maria channels are dead. I am using a disc cone, on a 20 foot mast. Scanner is a uniden Bct15x. I can hear civil Air no problem. I can pick up weather reports from Caldbeck. Any help would be appreciated

Possibly just too far inland, plus not a lot in the area. The lie of the land can be a factor. I'm less than two miles from Heysham harbour, but struggle to hear a lot coming from there outwith the control on 156.700. The main reason is FM is often line of site and Heysham to me is behind a big hill.

You are near Anthorn, a very interesting antenna there, rather large..used for submarine comms I recall

Can you please send a pm to me .
I want to ask about repeater near you.
Cheers

The BCT15X has a fast scan rate so can do all marine freqs quick

Along with the ones you have stored in already put in all the frequencies listed here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1959

That should get you all or at least most of the marine freqs you can hear from where you are. Program them all in, bang it on scan and sit back patient and listen

(the higher you can get your antenna the better, on land areas with buildings and hills signals struggle but on open sea they go for miles and miles)

A quicker option would be to set up a search bank running from 156.000 to 162.000 in 25 kHz steps first, then see what pops up, rather than plumb all those in and get nothing.

If you can get MSI from Caldbeck you should be able to get any Coastguard transmissions from there on 156.8 (:16) 156.375 (:67) and 156.0 (:0)
They will always announce the MSI on 16 before they start.

I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

I am near Wigton myself but more near to the coast and I hear some marine traffic but not a lot, mostly Silloth RNLI out on training runs and the occasional chatter on the marine private simplex channels from the boats working on or traveling to Robin Rigg (offshore wind farm). As was suggested set a scan and log what you have as sooner or later you should hear something.
