New antenna is 5 times the size of New York City.

I saw the following on Southgate ARC's news site.
China has built a giant experimental radio antenna on a piece of land almost five times the size of New York City, according to researchers involved in the highly controversial project.

The Wireless Electromagnetic Method (WEM) project took 13 years to build but researchers said that it was finally ready to emit extremely low frequency radio waves, also known as ELF waves. Those waves have been linked to cancer by the World Health Organisation-affiliated International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Although the project has civilian applications – officially it will be used for earthquake and mineral detection and forms part of China’s 11th five-year plan – it could also play a crucial role in military communications.

Scientists said that its transmissions could be picked up by a submarine lurking hundreds of metres under the sea, thus reducing the vessel’s risk of having to resurface to receive transmissions.

The project follows the construction of China’s first military-grade Super Low Frequency transmission station in 2009.

The next year, a Chinese nuclear submarine successfully communicated with the station from deep water – making China the third country in the world to have established such a submarine communication system, after the United States and Russia.

But the Chinese navy is eager to expand its capacity and has been pouring resources into the more advanced ELF radio technology, which allows submarines to communicate with the command centre from a greater depth and is harder to disrupt.

The Chinese government, however, has played down the importance of the facility, which occupies some 3,700 sq km (1,400 square miles) of land, in information released to the public.

Apart from the need to protect an important strategic asset, some researchers said that the secrecy was to avoid causing public alarm

China are taking over the world... :shocker:

One can only imagine the QRM this will cause on a large scale... :sneer:

Cancer is a much bigger concern.

I think Southgates should really check into these reports before re-publishing them. LF causing cancer? Really? LF is hardly that much above audio, so do we assume that everyone wearing in-ears turned up loud will get cancer rather than go deaf. The source is extremely vague. The one they built in suffolk for OTH radar never worked properly. The LF Government one near Rugby worked fine and nobody even thought of a cancer scare - so it will be interesting to read some facts. Southgate are normally on the ball, I'm surprised they went with tabloid rubbish on this one.

The problem has never been transmitting on LF to subs - most countries with submarines have done this for years, the problem is the submarines responding, which they can't do and remain covert. Sounds like a rubbish story.

EDIT
I Googled the sources in the story and found the Lancet article entitled Carcinogenicity of radio frequency electromagnetic fields information - and the basis of the report is that they have defined the RF spectrum as starting at 30KHz, meaning the Chinese system is within the range. The article re-inforces the opinion that the higher bands are where the trouble lays, and damage too human tissue increases as frequency increases. Considering military sites are not public, there seems a tiny risk to the Chinese public. I reckon its a totally media generated scare story.

Spot the small slips in this article
ELF waves have frequencies ranging from 30 to 3 Hz, meaning their wavelengths can be up to 10,000 and 100,000 kilometers long, respectively. Because of their great lengths, ELF waves are able to communicate small bits of information to submarine crews at depths where seawater would interfere with other radio transmissions.

Russia, the United States and India were previously the only countries believed to have established ELF facilities for communicating with submarines lurking at extraordinary depths. The US Navy's ELF sites operate at 76 Hz, according to a 2001 report by Federation of American Scientists.

Sorry - me again. 76Hz means a quarter wave is going to be tricky - and wouldn't be very nice on the ears, would it!

The fear frequency.

The following makes for interesting reading..
http://diyhpl.us/~nmz787/biological%20radio%20research/Electromagnetic%20Radiation%20and%20Human%20Health__A%20Review%20of%20Sources%20and%20Effects__Fluor%20Corporation.pdf

The biological effects of RF energy are proportional to the rate of energy absorption, and the level of absorption varies little with frequency.

Damage to tissue may be caused by exposure to high levels of RF energy because the body is not equipped to dissipate the excessive amounts of heat generated. Possible injuries include skin burns, deep burns, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

An Australian group claimed to have evidence that living near television broadcast station towers causes an increase in childhood leukemia.
However, follow-up studies conducted in Australia and in the UK contradicted this claim. The follow-up studies found no significant correlation between RF exposure and the rate of childhood leukaemia in these cases.

So standing near those sub bass speakers at a concert doesn't just hurt your ears! Neat!

I guess any claim depends upon a number of factors. Who is making the claim, for example. Is it by someone totally Independent or is it funded, supported, by someone who benefits from the claims made?
How long you are effected by this situation.
The volume level, or level of RF field etc etc.
And a whole load of other factors.
Many years ago an experiment was conducted. One group of researchers were asked to research blue light. As our research says it gives real benefits.
Another group were asked to research blue light as someone is saying it gives benefits to... But we can find no evidence of it being the case.
Both sets of independent researchers produced research which supported the opinion of the person asking the question & thus paying the bill.
