Scanner software for SDR radio?

Postby StandingWave » Tue Feb 19, 2019 4:53 pm

Is there any scanner software that can be used for an SDR radio, for example with an RTLSDR or an SDRplay radio?
I seem to get hits only on document scanners!

EDIT: Ok just spotted this thread further down the list:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6616
which I will look out for, but, is there anything else out there?

SDRUno V1.3 now has scanning.
memory bank scanning is working but think i've hit a bug with range scanning.

As far as I know there is no software that allows a SDR to be used as a scanner comparable to any modern digi or analogue scanner. . But with the bandspread, they do make amazing receivers.
Buy a database from Kimmy JS19 via http://ukscanningdirectory.co.uk/
Or do Google search of this forum via http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=partner-pub-6291336405621919:2662881632

Airspy can do retunes pretty fast, at least from using spectrumspy. shame they don't give a crap about adding features to sdrsharp.

freqmgrsuite.com from Jeff Knapp in the USA is very good if you stick with it and read the manual.

Somewhat bloated for everyday use...why install all that other guff? You don't actually need much of the stuff he has you install if all you want is the scanner plugin for sdrsharp....install, keep the couple of dlls for his actual scanner plugin you need then uninstall all his other carp. Oh, and remember not to rely on his database as it's a pain in the behind (import and export are near useless and will almost certainly not suit UK users).

For searching using an rtl device then the russian plugin for sdrsharp works well once you get your head round tweaking it the way you want.

For SDRplay devices then the new sdruno is ok. The scanner functionality needs a lot of work and it has some very serious limitations...but it's a great start and fits nicely into the overall package.

For linux users there are loads of options but they all involve getting under the onnet a bit rather than being like a ready made windows application.

off topic: Your latest blog post is nicely put together :)

Thanks rozbiff,
It is sometimes hard to get your head around such a simple request (scanning with an sdr) could be so hard.
It is though when you think about it, all that interference has to be digitally processed along with the stuff you want to hear.
Separating the 2 can be challenging for developers, all those bleeps hisses and blobs turned into 1 and 0 s and then piped through the sdr to produce an analogue sound all in the blink of an eye.

We want a lot as radio listeners and the developers are chasing those wants day in day out.

I had a lengthy and very engaging conversation with Jeff Knapp of freqmgrsuite.com before writing my article on the airspy r2,

http://www.merseyradar.co.uk/airband-radio/new-sdr-radio-purchase-airspy-r2/

Jeff is as good as it gets..doing all this for nothing, for the love of the hobby. Awesome work.
The skill involved is mind blowing.
I congratulate Jeff, Simon Brown, Youseff Touil from airspy, all those at sdr play and a multitude of others on the various forums for their efforts.
What a plethora of expertise !

Reminds me of the planefinder/flightaware ADSB forums, using a humble DVB-T dongle, started small with just a few of us in the antenna building sections, went very technical within weeks, now its massive and the things that have been achieved for very low cost are nothing short of amazing.

I downloaded a "plugin" for my SDR Sharp for scanning.
