Pro 2039 not taking Military frequencies

Postby transit80 » Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:07 am

Hello everyone, Ive just joined this forum as I am retiring in a few months and want to get back into listening/ watching civil and military aircraft. I have a Realistic PRO 2039 200 channel scanner with a Royal(?) discone aerial set up on a 20ft extendable pole, all this is at the bottom of our garden in my workshop. Now, the problem I have is when I try and select any military frequency all I get is Error on the screen, its got about 12/15 civil frequencies in it and from what I can hear its working on the civil airband what is not happening is the military stuff.
The lack of an instruction manual doesn`t help so I was wondering if any of you knowledgeable people could point me in the right direction with advice as to what to do or possibly what i am doing wrong or should I bin it and buy a new scanner.

Looking at the band plan it does not cover the Mil AM UHF band.

Chris

So looking at this website https://rigreference.com/rigs/3865-radioshack-realistic-pro-2039 it shows the bands (Rx range) it covers. The mil band AM UHF is in the 200 mhz band so is missed by this scanner. You may get Mil VHF on it but that is not very common use.

Hello Chris,

A thelad points out your 2039 simply doesn't cover the mil airband: you need one that covers 225-400Mhz, in 25khz steps and with AM modulation.

While it might be one of the few popular-make scanners that I dont have, I would recommend you take a look at a Uniden UBC125XLT. It'll cost about £130. If you're interested in civil and mil airband scanning this should work well for you. Dont bin your 2039...once you get hooked you will realise that having [at least] two scanners is a good thing.

http://www.rigpix.com/rs-realistic/real ... ro2039.htm This main page of this link covers an awful lot of scanners and other radios. yours misses out a great junk between 174Mhz and 380Mhz which is where you need to be.

Thank you for the replies, I see what you mean about the coverage. I will now try and persuade my wife that my life needs a Uniden 125XLT :smiles: please be prepared for more daft questions.

Would like to thank you all for replies and advice. As from yesterday up until about an hour ago I have been looking at every flippin scanner either brand new or used and decided that the Uniden 125XLT is the one I will buy, also I have ordered a set of three aerials from Broadsword Antennas, so with them and my Discone aerial on me shed I should be able to listen to something.
Get ready for questions on frequencies    .

Well done Chris. You will also likely want to checkout Nick's excellent Scan125 software: https://www.nick-bailey.co.uk/scan125/

For frequencies maybe try out https://milscanners.groups.io/
